a few potent moments

Before we begin I just wanted to remind you, the first Being and Breathing drop-in meditation is tomorrow January 12, 5-6 PM. Looking forward to seeing some of you there!

I love a new year. I love the feeling of the expanse that lies before. All of those cliché metaphors for the hope of the future, what comes next, all of it works for me. Which is funny because when I reflect on the scale of the year before it is hard for me to hold.

Maybe that is because of the cadence of my life, with large parts spent with young children has the speed and rhythm of an EDM song. Or maybe it’s because of the ever-changing sparkly phenomenon of newness in our collective lives. New posts,. New articles. A new photo to scrutinize.

However difficult it is though, I think it’s worth it to change scale and time for reflection, if for no other reason than to remember, this is actually our lives. We are actually here. It’s really unfolding for all of us, all together and individually.

So with that, here are a few select moments pulled from a blurry year that stand out for reflection. They don’t necessarily mean much but for some reason or another a few .

-Watching the rain through the skylight most mornings starting from last February as I lay on my back by the fire during my morning practice. Sky. Clouds. Swallows. Big fat raindrops but mostly soft Pacific Northwest drizzle.

-Two big trees cut down just outside the window of my studio and the slap of the trunk on the driveway. Whining chainsaws. The way it felt inside my body, dizzy, rattled. So much light afterwards. And squirrels making the most of the plunder of pinecones.

-The yearly argument about membrillo or quince paste, my position is consistently that it is always too much until I taste it and wish the entire refrigerator was full of that perfumed pink just-right textured treat.

-So many plunges into the cold water of the Puget Sound reaching into the end of October. Somehow, cold water does it for me right now. It is so big, smart, and undeniable when you are in it. Once I stepped on a big crab and felt it scuttle away under my toes.

When you think about your past year, what stands out to you? Can you remember without naming why? I’d love to hear some of your memories.
