big time
Sometimes, and I guess often August is this time, there is a quality to living where things are so close together that it gets difficult to distinguish them from one another. The thing and the other thing start to have that quality of a greasy mirror. This is how this stretch of time has been for me.
I can’t really tell what happened first, what is coming next, or even if this is just the new way of seeing this…blurred with flashes of brightness.
This is the experience of being in a time machine. Greasy mirrors are a common occurrence in my house. Finger prints. Smears. Leftover mega smudges from open mouthed kisses and funny faces.
I have gone in and out of feeling like this for years. For a while a fellow artist friend and I talked, worked, and dreamed up a lot about time machines. Time machines are ordinary objects, experiences, or moments that bend time. Some examples of this are:
The way it feels to ride a bike down a jasmine scented hill at night with your friends, is it moment or an eternity?
Watching a fire go from a smoldering pile of sticks to an ignited being.
Pain, it exists in the always while it is happening, and then (even if it chronic and familiar) the quality changes and changes and changes.
We often don’t notice these time machines and I am curious what would happen if we did? What would happen to us if as we planted our gardens, went on walks, raised children, submerged ourselves in water, read poems, we felt how time changed?
How it can soften? Stretch? Reform itself? What if when we looked at clouds, stars, migrating birds, we could see into the weave of before and after?
What happens if the time machines keep us here? Alive? Curious?
